Roscoe will need someone experienced in working with mishandled horses. Roscoe was adopted in 2020 and we do not know what happened in his adoptive home before he came back to us in November of 2023 but his behavior was different when he returned. Roscoe is sound but his right eye is atrophied (therefore he is blind in it) due to an injury he sustained before he came to us in 2018. Roscoe was also very thin when he came back so we have spent the last year letting Roscoe decompress and get physically and mentally healthy again.
He is a 14 yr old grade Paint gelding who stands 15 hands. He is broke to ride and, in the past, has been ridden in the mountains and worked cattle in a feedlot.
We have not thrown a leg over Roscoe in the last year but recently we have been doing ground work with him to see where he is. He is easy to catch (he is a huge pocket pony), he leads, loads, and ties. He stands to be tacked up and stands for the farrier. When we started working with him again, he would back and slowly spin to stay away from you when walking to his side to mount. Through patience and quiet conversation, he got to where he would stand like he did in the past. All we have done up to this point is step into the stirrup and stand then get down. He exhibits a bit of nervousness while doing this action by setting back very slightly but that is the extent of it. We believe that with the right person that he can trust, Roscoe will be the fantastic trail horse he once was.
