Duke is estimated to be a 3-year-old. 16.2 hh. He is being rehomed because his owner died of brain cancer, right in the middle of saving a herd of misfit horses. We don’t know much about him other than what can be observed, but he is reported to be gelded.
Duke can be approached in a field, and he stands calmly to be haltered. He trailers well, even in stressful situations. He has no problem leading, turning, stopping, and backing. He shows no fear when asked to pass through a gate or into a barn. He stands calmly when tied, and knows to yield his hindquarters, though he needs more practice yielding his forequarters.
He knows how to walk, trot, and canter at a lunge. He appears to be sound but has a fairly significant injury to his back right leg that is still healing. It appears he had a barbed wire incident. We will take a video of him moving next time we go see him. He did not like when we tried to take his blanket off or to check his hooves. His hooves are in need of a trim and are overgrown.
Duke would be a good project horse for a training home. Our guess on breed is Thoroughbred. He has pink and blue lips so a tattoo couldn’t be seen, but it is possible.
His rehoming fee goes towards paying off the loan on our horse trailer, which allows us to pick up horses, take them to the vet, and do anything else that might need to be done.
