The Oklahoma Thoroughbred Retirement Program (OTRP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started by a veteran group of Oklahoma horsemen concerned about the future of ex-racehorses. While there is a great need nationally to help find new homes and opportunities for all ex-racehorses, the founders of the OTRP felt “charity should start at home.” The OTRP is dedicated to providing new opportunities to Oklahoma Thoroughbred racehorses that have finished their racing careers. These opportunities include rehabilitation, retraining, adoption and/or permanent retirement. In addition, the OTRP works with other rescue groups across the country to help place non-Oklahoma horses.

While the OTRP has been successful in placing nearly 80 adoptable horses in new homes, there are a number of permanently retired horses that, because of injury, are not candidates for adoption. While they receive the best of care at satellite farms in Oklahoma at charitable rates, they make up the vast majority of the OTRP’s ongoing, permanent monthly obligations.

The OTRP is an organization made up entirely of volunteers. There are no salaried employees, expenses for offices, or overhead associated with staffing. One hundred percent of the funds donated to the OTRP are used for caring for the horses. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
