Description

Bailey arrived at Helping Hearts in March, 2013 with a neurological deficit in his hind end and only minimally handled. We examined and observed. We tested and treated for EPM with no improvement. The degree of deficit ebbs and wanes, sometimes with his activity level, sometimes with the weather. This reinforces my gut feeling that the issue is injury-based ... a dealer delivered him to his first owner (who was expecting a kid-broke pony for a riding program) as an unhandled 3 yr old. He arrived at his second home with this hitch in his giddy-up. I picked Bailey up from that home when he was 6 yrs old and still pretty much unhandled. He’d been living out in a field for farmland assessment. The farm was for sale and they’d been trying to place him for 3-4 months.

Over the past 6 years of observing Bailey I’ve concluded that he is what he is. The deficit doesn’t make him dangerous. Of course he’ll never be safe to ride. But he doesn’t fall down or fall over. He’s just ungainly behind. During this time, he’s become trusting of people, much more handleable and seeking attention.

I recently reviewed our permanent residents and Bailey struck me as the most home-able. At 12 yrs of age, he’s still quite young. He’s personable. He really has no special needs — just some Bute to ease inflammation when he’s particularly wonky behind. Some of our volunteers have stepped up to work more intensively with Bailey to help him be the best citizen he can be, so he can find a loving home as a companion/pet. He’s learning to cross-tie, he’s practicing grooming and picking up his feet, and he’s broadening his horizons by taking walks around the farm. As the weather warms, they’ll get him more relaxed about the wash stall, baths and fly spray. And then Bailey will be ready and waiting for that loving home. 💞

If you are ready for a bit of a challenge, with rewards of love and companionship, consider Bailey
