Description

Lavender came to us after her owner was physically unable to care for her. Unfortunately for Lavender she had been left on her own for three years and when she arrived at the farm she was hyper-vigilant, reactive and just plain scared. As is typical of a lot of haflingers, much of her fear was manifested in pushiness and a lack of spatial boundaries. In other words she’d jump on you.

She won’t do that now, as long as you keep clear boundaries with her. Lavender is a sweet, easy going mare and the longer she is with the herd and understands she has a leader and isn’t having to take care of everything herself, the better she gets. The mare that would originally walk over you now leads respectfully by your side. She loads and she does just about anything you ask without being terrified.

We began riding Lavender lightly in 2018, it appeared she had no ring experience—in fact the ring terrified her—but she seems okay on the trail. WE continue to ride her on the road and in the ring as well as lots of groundwork. Last year when we began to ride in the ring consistently, she went lame in both hind legs. After a vet visit, stress test and some x-rays, it appears that Lavender will be fine as a pony to be led around with a child on her or for light riding around the yard. She can do sporadic trail riding if you maintain bar shoes in the back. Her hind legs are so straight that she will continue to experience lameness issues in the stifle unless some change in conformation is added, ie, the bar shoes. She is now being ridden occasionally on the road with regular groundwork.

We are looking for a loving forever home for Lavender who maybe enjoys working with her on the ground, light riding, and/or wants the company of a pasture buddy.
