Frenchys Pit Viper (barn name “Viper”) is just about the cutest foal we have seen ! Though he now sports his “baby” coat of light tan, he has an undercoat of a gray color so he will almost surely be a grulla Appaloosa ! He also has a very prominent black line down his spine and over his butt. He wears a thick black mane and tail, has dark sclera eyes and two striped hooves. Viper’s hip blanket is actually 2 big white circles – one on each hip with irregular tan “splashes” inside each one. He has a very powerful long sloping hind end, well developed muscling all over, especially his legs, shoulders, hips and gaskins. Viper is the whole package, showing advanced muscular development for a colt born in June of 2025.
Viper’s dam is a direct descendent of the famous top barrel horse sire Frenchmans Guy, and also the All American Futurity winner Dash for Cash. She also carries performance horse blood going back to Docs Quixote, Miss N Cash and Docs Hickory. His sire line goes back to Prince Plaudit, Joker Bee and other prominent Appaloosas bred from Quarter Horse stock to refine and improve the Appaloosa breed while prominent AQHA horses also show up on this sire side of Viper’s breeding also. Viper is genetically about 3/4 Quarter Horse and he shows it – he shows the small wedge shaped head, refined muzzle, small “pin” ears, short back over his longer underline, square hip, and sloping butt so popular today. He is quick and catty, but very friendly and happy to oblige his handlers by accepting fly spray, washing and grooming all over, picking up and cleaning (as well as trimming) his hooves. We have attached a short video of Viper for you to see him in action. He is able to run and maneuver in small places with ease. He is being trained in the round pen as well; learning voice commands, changing direction, changing gaits, lead changes, and stopping on a dime to be caught. He will be loading, unloading, hauling quietly in the trailer, standing tied inside and outside the trailer, and letting us rub a saddle pad all over him, too.
Viper is the youngest of our homebred colts for 2025, but by no means the slowest or most shy. He is being weaned and he is quiet in a stall. Because he has run out in the pasture with his dam all summer and fall, he is fit and muscular. His mind is ready to accept the lessons we have scheduled for him and he has been a pleasure to work with, as he has shown no bad baby behaviors so far – not even nipping. He also has a lot of sense that you cannot teach a horse…Viper has never hurt himself or even gotten a cut in the pasture. His mama, one of our older homebred broodmares, has taken really good care of him and taught him how to stay safe.
