Delegate (affectionately known as Big D) is a big, sweet gelding who has quite the history. In his youth, he raced 27 times. Eventually he ended up with a family who adored him, and was a safe, solid riding partner for just about anyone who didn’t mind his height. Unfortunately, one of his owner’s passed away, and the other broke her hip, and he found himself in a boarding environment with his two mustang friends – one of which came to GSH at the same time (Maverick). Kept in a small pen with the mustangs and underfed by the boarding barn (as the owner was unable to physically do the chores due to her injury), Maverick and Delegate were bullied off their feed and both lost a significant amount of weight – at which time they were evicted from the boarding facility due to their condition. The distraught owner’s son stepped in and made arrangements for them to come to a friend near GSH, who asked for our help upon arrival due their very poor condition.
Delegate is gentle, loves attention and kisses, and is rapidly gaining weight after having his teeth floated, being dewormed, and being fed a massive amount of food. We discovered large abscess holes in both front feet, but he is recovering well from them.
Big D is still on a weight gain diet, but would thrive in a home where he has regular attention. We have not evaluated him under saddle but he’s easy to catch, lead, loads nicely, is good for farrier, and loves his blankets. We have every reason to believe he will be as good under saddle as we have been told.
Big D is a size 81 blanket at this point, and due to his weight and breed we have already started blanketing him for winter. We will include a medium weight and heavy weight (with neck cover) blanket for an additional $250.
