Second Stride is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization providing professional rehabilitation, retraining, and placement for retired thoroughbred racehorses in qualified homes so that they may reach their full potential in a productive second career.
Second Stride is based in Prospect, Kentucky, and works with the racing industry to find new homes for thoroughbreds who never make it to the track, or need to retire because they are no longer racing.
Second Stride was founded in 2005. Since that time we have taken in, retrained and adopted out over 600 thoroughbreds. The reason we continue to grow each year is because our professional staff and volunteers understand the unique needs of thoroughbreds when they retire from racing, the only life they have ever known.
We evaluate each horse, and determine any physical or mental issues that need to be addressed. While we address those concerns, we slowly begin their transition, with a focus on introducing them to non-racing, farm life. We go at their speed, and evaluate them as to what they show potential in, and what they enjoy doing. Then when they are ready, we begin to retrain them in their new career and look for the right new owner, to provide them with the care and companionship they will need to have a great life after racing.
We are so appreciative of our wonderful adopters, who enable our thoroughbreds to show how with the right transition and retraining, they can do most anything other horses can do.
