What is EIA? It's a blood disease found in horses. E.I.A. stands for Equine Infectious Anemia. EIA is not contagious to humans and does not affect humans.
It is detected by a test known as the Coggins test.
The horses at our ranch are not sick, but carry antibodies in their bloodstream to the virus that causes "equine infectious anemia" OR (EIA).
The chance of one horse infecting another is approximately 1 in 6 million. Regardless, there is a law in Florida requiring positive EIA horses to be quarantined on property with a 200 yard radius from the nearest negative horse. If that is not possible, the horse must be destroyed even though it is healthy. There are some stables that do not have space to comply with this law, so they must have their horses euthanized.[killed]
F.R.I.E.N.D.S. needs your support to maintain a safe haven for these horses!
