In July 2011, SHARE went back to the nurse mare farm with a local family who were willing to take on some nurse mares home to raise themselves. There we met Sierra, and the owner said she was going to go straight to slaughter because she was mean. Sierra bore the evidence--injuries on her forehead where she had been hit with a 2x4.
In reality, Sierra is sweet and a little bit shy. She really has had no training, so she had no manners, but she's definitely not a mean horse. We do not believe she has any experience under saddle. Sierra had a beautiful black (who is going grey) filly on 2-16-12. The baby has an adoption pending.
We weaned Mama Sierra and baby on 8-12-12. Sierra is ready to start looking for her own forever home. She is a nice horse with good ground manners. She is in good health and handled the weaning without any issues. She's currently in a foster home near SHARE getting lead-up work to being started under saddle when the weather allows, but she is available for adoption at anytime now!
Update June 2014: Sierra is starting her ground work to get her ready to be started undersaddle. She lunges well and we have introduced a surcingle. Sierra will be ready to be started undersaddle in no time!
Her adoption fee is $500.
We only adopt to a homes within a 3 hour radius of Champaign, Illinois and we do require that you fill out an application before we can schedule an appointment. An application is not a commitment from you, but we have over 40 horses for adoption and this allows our volunteers to make the best use of their time!
