Swingn Slew may be one of the very best geldings to graduate from our Gate to Great training program. He has excelled not only as a ranch horse for us, but as a winning rodeo mount and a hunter over fences as well. There is practically nothing this horse will not do if you ask him. Slew is one of our head trainer, Dale's, all time favorite horses and is only being offered for sale so that Dale is not so tempted to engage in the joy of riding Slew rather than take a new trainee out!
Swingn Slew has been at the ranch since shortly after his last start in August of 2011. After some R&R in the big pasture, he began the Gate to Great training schedule that fall and has never looked back. He one of the top ranch roping horses in the region, able to easily rope and drag 200+ calves a day to the branding fire...this after spending 4-5 hours gathering the cattle in the large, rough country pastures in our area. There is nothing he won't go through...water, tall bridges, steep ravines...he has seen it all and mastered it. Dale states that Slew might be "the best all-around horse I have ever sat upon." Dale has ridden some mighty fine horses, so that is really quite a statement!
In addition to his ranch work, Slew has been hauled to area ranch rodeos where he has been a part of more than a few winning teams. He has also been regularly hauled to local jumping clinics and has shown great form and interest over fences. He works quietly in the arena and responds beautifully to leg and seat cues. Slew also ground ties, is hobble-trained, pickets, trailers great, shoes without even being tied and, well, is simply awesome!
Bloodlines: Swingn Slew is by the A.P. Indy son, Swing Lord and out of the Tejano Run mare, Larun. Swing Lord, a winner of $23,580, is out of the Mr. Prospector mare Dance with Grace, making him a full brother to Indy Dancer, who placed third in the 2003 Florida Derby and now stands at stud in Chile. Dance with Grace is also the dam of multiple graded stakes placed Setsuko and Pictural, an El Prado gelding with earnings over $200,000.
Swing Slew's dam, Larun, won her only start at three and was subsequently retired to the breeding shed. Her sire, Tejano Run, is best known for his second place finish in the 1994 Kentucky Derby as well as being a multiple graded stakes winner over 4 seasons at the track. Larun's dam, La Rubie, is a daughter of the champion sprinter, Rubiano.
Race Record: Slew broke his maiden on his third start, in a maiden claiming event at River Downs in Ohio. He won that race by a eye-catching four lengths. It took him 13 races to get his second win, also at River Downs, with a 7 1/2 length victory. Slew raced a total of 22 times with 2 first place finishes, 5 seconds and 3 thirds for earnings of $14,121. When he was no longer competitive, his owners chose to place him with Gate to Great rather than risk injury and we have been happy to have him here since then!
